The King of Papua
New Guinea
by David Hay
As a 17-year-old student, King Charles spends a week visiting an Anglican boarding school outside Popondetta in New Guinea. Entertained at dinner by the English headmaster, his Indian wife, Australian government officials, and a Peace Corps volunteer, a Black American, Charles is introduced to the controversy of the day: two male teachers, one European, the other New Guinean, have been seen having sex. The penalties under the moral code imported from England, and strictly enforced, mandate a jail term of 14 years. During dinner one of the attendees is suspected. Then another. An argument ensues, an arrest imminent… all to be resolved by the young prince, the first consequential decision of his life.
